Palm Zire 72 and Sony Clie TJ37: duel, only to a duel!

Of palmOne and Sony - enemies and friends, competitors and partners, finally, Americans and Japanese, respectively. However, despite the inconsistency of their combines large-scale activity on the handheld-computer market. Both manufacturers over the years confirms its leadership. If palmOne known tradeoffs, as well as the broadest coverage of the audience, starting with the most affordable PDA, then the Sony more characteristic of technological innovation and design refinements. However, the two giants are equally remarkable in light of the latest novelties. Thus, the model Sony Clie TJ37, Sony and Palm Zire 72 from palmOne compete with one another almost on an equal footing, having similar functionality and a very similar price. Understandably, in such a situation, the inhabitant is not easy to decide on a specific purchase, the more so because both products have turned out to be extremely worthy. Therefore, we will all find out together and choose the best out of the middle class platform Palm OS, bringing handhelds in real hard duels.
Palm Zire 72 and Sony Clie TJ37: duel, only to a duel!
We begin, as usual, with the packaging. Set both computers do not suffer from an excess of - all in moderation, but nothing extraordinary. The cradle is missing, it replaces the cable, which can often be even more convenient. Especially it will please people who have to often stay away from home - lace smaller and lighter base. Cover is only complete with Zire 72. TJ37 satisfied with hinged protective lid and a "handcuff" to wear on your wrist. In other similar delivery - documentation, software etc.

Having reviewed the "clothes", get "access to the body" and enjoy the true form of machines. Externally, handhelds are quite different. If the TJ37 is restrained and conservative, the design Zire 72 Crickley and modern. Machine from palmOne combines a light metallic gray with blue insert. Track looks very stylish and cool, even the kind of original. TJ37 in this regard are simpler, but more impressive. With a matte light gray casing as a whole, it dilutes the picture of scarce inserts brilliant controls and region of the chamber. Thus, the product palmOne longer have to afford the young buyer who wants to stand out from the crowd and get into private use an elegant stylish thing, which is envied by friends. But this product from Sony will obviously prefer a more solid customers who value in things to emphasize their status in society.
Palm Zire 72 and Sony Clie TJ37: duel, only to a duel!
In contrast to the exterior of the ergonomics of both computers are fairly similar. Particularly contribute to this subjectively very similar size-weight parameters. Controls to launch the product palmOne forward. In TJ37 they are more likeable, but also less convenient. Particularly upset at all the miniature keyboard accelerator applications. Not better to get the navigation buttons and a very low speed. Zire 72 in this regard as far from ideal - it clearly lacks the scroll wheel or lever bearing on the left side, but it is available it is more convenient than the TJ37.

Exterior Decoration, exterior

"Geography" elements in the CCP test is as follows. At the top end TJ37 has stilusny compartment, "eyes" Wi-Fi-module and an IR port, headphone output and an expansion slot.Do Zire 72 Wi-Fi has changed Bluetooth'om and Memory Stick - SD / MMC, added a button on / off, the rest of the composition remained the same.
Palm Zire 72 and Sony Clie TJ37: duel, only to a duel!
Both handheld expansion slot closes the shutter - the most practical option of protection from dirt and dust. Location headphone jack on the upper side is also true in terms of ergonomics. Finally, the "eyes" of wireless capabilities on top - the perfect solution that will relieve the user from the inconvenience, for example, when using the PDA as a remote control. And here is quite small and almost no acting at the level of housing a button on / off switch for Zire 72 - a controversial move of the manufacturer. The fact is that to use it because of miniature is not too convenient, and high demand for this element is obvious why the declining overall ergonomics. Do not paint the device and right-sided position output for headphones - pivot "geography" TJ37 is more convenient and practical. The left side contains the new items from Sony mount a protective cover, while the Zire 72 is a button to start recording.
Palm Zire 72 and Sony Clie TJ37: duel, only to a duel!
Location on the left side of the case only for fixing the cover - a luxury. This facet is very easy to use, to dispose of it so generously. Better picture of Zire 72, but even here there is only one element, and he is not the first priority. We can only guess why the company decided to withdraw from, say, a scroll wheel, or a hardware button controls the camera, which would have been here at the time. At the bottom of a TJ37 is a connector for synchronization and a slider open / close the camera lens. Charging is performed by the staff of the adapter. Zire 72 deprived of the hardware controls the camera, with only a hole for charging and syncing.
Palm Zire 72 and Sony Clie TJ37: duel, only to a duel!
Such a location of a chamber slide in the product from Sony, though not very comfortable, yet clearly paints a typewriter in the light of the lack of similar opportunities for Zire 72. Incidentally, the last - a big minus an American, because the camera lens in the CCP remains without any protection to the blows of fate. It is strange that palmOne did so recklessly. On the right side of the Sony Clie TJ37 is a button shooting, as well as a slider on / off / lock device. Zire 72 uses this face for the stylus, but because the controls are not in cars.
Palm Zire 72 and Sony Clie TJ37: duel, only to a duel!
In this case, the Zire 72 looks again to the feast of ascetic elements in TJ37. If the function of capturing a frame from a computer running joystick navigation, the hardware lock, available from the competitors, 72 of the models available - a big minus for music lovers.
Palm Zire 72 and Sony Clie TJ37: duel, only to a duel!
On the back of the TJ37 are the speaker, camera, and the hole soft rezet. Absolutely identical situation with the Zire 72. True, the "geography" of these elements in different machines, but an equal. The lower part of the front panel of the Japanese computer looks more stylish and compact. It contains four hardware application buttons, two navigation keys left and right, as well as the scroll wheel. Despite their cute, as noted above, it is also less ergonomic analogue of the palmOne Zire 72. American track occupies almost the entire sub-screen area and is clearly inferior to the Japanese rival in elegance. However, it is surprisingly comfortable, although innovative in comparison to its predecessor, Zire 71 - the joystick is now replaced by an ordinary Five-way button. Incidentally, the latter is very ergonomic and certainly lovers of toys.
Palm Zire 72 and Sony Clie TJ37: duel, only to a duel!
Such a seemingly simple and nothing unremarkable element, such as a stylus, in test models differ markedly. If he TJ37 telescopic metal-plastic, cute, but pretty thin and lightweight, making average of ergonomics, the copy available to the Zire 72, was pleased with the convenience, the same design refinements were "overboard." In the latter case we have a whole plastic pen in black - far from the ideal of beauty instance. We summarize the exterior impression. Each of the duelists has its pros and cons of each have positive and negative sides, each suitable for different users. If you are a little concerned about ergonomics PDA, but it would be nice to show off to friends, acquaintances, colleagues, Sweet Home Alabama, Sony Clie TJ37 would be at the time. Handheld, though, and has a rich set of controls, and an enviable compact, and quite moderate weight, it is unlikely the buyer will appreciate the convenience of work. palmOne Zire 72, with quite a nice "up" as a whole, is inferior in elegance parts Japanese competitors. But the machine is easy to operate, unless, of course, a close eye on its management of asceticism. Furthermore, in terms of exterior paint is not explicitly Zire 72 and the lack of protection for the chamber of the lens that has a TJ37, and even managed in hardware. This drop of tar fixes regular cover of the American product, which looks much more attractive and more practical to use than a flip lid TJ37. In general, both models showed a roughly equal contenders - the same way and at the same time in different strengths, and therefore to make possible an objective verdict to the internal machines.

Comparison of hardware

Hardware palmOne Zire 72 is based on Intel processor with a clock frequency of 312 MHz, while the TJ37 has a 200 MHz-m "stones" produced by Motorola. Let us not make hasty conclusions, and provide a benchmark, in which dwell a little lower, the more so subjective in their daily work pretty hard to notice the difference, especially if you do not execute on the PDA "heavy" tasks like video playback. On the part of RAM handhelds are almost identical - 32 total and 24/23 MB user accessible from Zire 72, and Clie TJ37, respectively. But on the expansion slot situation is quite different. So, the TJ37 has a proprietary Memory Stick - not very common and quite expensive format, of which Sony is simply a pity to abandon in the light of the considerable sums invested in it. At the same time, the Zire 72 has a democratic and SD / MMC, which, of course, has not yet CompactFlash, but not Memory Stick, in general, the best option for a compact device. Particularly pleased with standard support SDIO, which means that the opportunity to equip handheld card peripherals, significantly expanding thereby functional machine. Both experimental modules have built-in wireless, however, different standards. If the Zire 72 is a ubiquitous and therefore demanded Bluetooth, then the TJ37 has a not too popular, but is rapidly growing in its usefulness ordinary user Wi-Fi. We are convinced that many of the latter can be useful especially in light of its active promotion, but the Bluetooth we still seem more attractive, but because Zire 72 gets another point in your cart.

Comparison of the cameras

Photo opportunities are actively included in the latest mobile devices are constantly being improved and new functions. That's our "rabbits" have a similar bonus.
Palm Zire 72 and Sony Clie TJ37: duel, only to a duel!
Unfortunately, none of the existing cameras are not supplemented with standard flash, and therefore have to care about proper lighting. On paper, the question of leadership does not even arise - Zire 72 has four times more powerful matrix that can take pictures in a totally "adult" 1280 x 960 pixels - unattainable strap for most modern phones and PDAs. With regard to Japanese rivals, its maximum image mode is only in the mobile standard 640 x 480 pixels. At the same time Zire 72 has the ability to shoot not only the highest quality mode, but some of the following options: 640 x 480 320 x 240 and 160 x 120 pixels. TJ37 available for 320 x 240, 320 x 480 160 x 120 pixels. By increasing the frame of the computers are identical - both phones are equipped with doubly digital zoom.

Practical testing has revealed a very bleak picture - none of the cameras are not capable of making a truly high-quality images that can be printed out and hung on the wall of pillows, enjoying every evening to his skill. Yes, of course, the Zire 72 features a surprisingly good and could be more than sufficient for printing, but the novelty is unsatisfactory works even when the average luminance, not to mention the twilight or even night. Not better things in the handheld with similar objects, and even more close-up. In general, the true quality of shots is not much better, and sometimes even worse than the TJ37. From losing model saves a high-resolution imagery and blurred at the edges of the photographs made Sony Clie TJ37. The latter, by the way, perhaps the only serious drawback Japanese PDA. In other machine has proved to be a good idea - you can take pictures even in rooms not the best light, and close objects clearly distinguishable. Established shade for a chamber of the lens and the call does TJ37 with high-technology sibling.

Screens and nutrition

One of the most important elements of any PDA is the screen, and therefore to him should be treated with the utmost care when choosing a machine. And we will treat ... Displays considered handhelds on paper are identical - 320 x 320 pixels, 16 bit, 65000 colors displayed. However, in practice, the instance is available for palmOne Zire 72, was pleased to higher brightness and richness of colors. However, this does not mean that the TJ37 bad screen does - he is one of the best, but the Zire 72 is even better :-). They feed on handhelds in the budget "lean" batteries fixed restorations. If the capacity of "stomach" Zire 72 is 950 mAh, then the TJ37's is only 800 mAh. In both cases, the functionality is quite high, and similar savings in size and weight characteristics of the device and the price seems too reasonable. But let's not just predict the death, such as patients breathe a little bit ... The tests were carried out in as close to real conditions. Thus, we used not something one application or task, and the average download - reading, games, audio, video, work with the camera module and wireless Internet browsing via the infrared port on a phone Philips 530. In the end we got the following figures: a little over two hours (2:08) at the TJ37 and nearly four hours (3:49) at the Zire 72. As they say, the result is obvious - Zire 72 out of reach.

Hardware results

Summing up the hardware, we can safely conclude advantage Zire 72. Machine, though not significantly, but still closer to its rival for leadership. This computer has the more relevant for most users of wireless module is equipped with a nimble processor and high-quality screen and an expansion slot for a common standard. Finally, Zire 72 has, albeit not the best in most cases, but certainly much more attractive on paper camera. Colors apparatus and more battery life. Thus, the hardware innards derive Zire 72 forward, but look what they managed, because the hardware without software is like a rider without a horse.
Palm Zire 72 and Sony Clie TJ37: duel, only to a duel!
And Sony, and palmOne are known for their generosity on the part of the software, but from the very beginning Zire 72 become leaders because of the newer operating system version - 5.2.8 vs. 5.2.1 in TJ37. Changes, of course, are small, but morally such a trifle puts American product is slightly higher. Additional staff and suites are pleased with both machines - it has everything you need to meet the initial requirements have just bought the machine user.

Performance tests Zire 72 and Clie TJ37

Testing the performance of new products was carried out using the benchmark Speedy 3.1:
Palm Zire 72 and Sony Clie TJ37: duel, only to a duel!
As can be seen, the speed of Zire 72 is clearly higher than the performance Clie TJ37. And, interestingly, the cause is not only smart, "stone" - tests show excellent performance and memory, and a graphic part.

Summary

Well, it's time to draw conclusions from the above. As already mentioned, both products are made at a very high level and not disappoint their respective owners. However, in many ways the Zire 72 still goes around the opponent. Of course, Clie TJ37 also not born shit, there he has a competitive advantage, but they do not allow the model to get ahead is really more successful than the Americans, who simply destined to become the spring-summer hit sales. Mobile trio of GPS, Palm and a cell phone on Elbrus

This article describes the work of a group of mobile devices during the ascent of Mount Elbrus. The author does not pursue any commercial interest, and wants to share his impressions of the connective devices (GPS + Palm + cell phone) in real conditions.
Mobile trio of GPS, Palm and a cell phone on Elbrus
I travel a lot and upon returning friends always asked to tell what they saw, about what happened. Once I sent the letter in the mail from the cities that passed, but I could send a letter to one or two destinations. And so I came up with the idea: "And do not make a newsletter by email? All the necessary components I have. And your friends can get me the news." If you are going on a trip to Mount Elbrus, I decided to implement this idea. So what happened? Ligament consisted of a handheld Palm Vx, Siemens S35 mobile phone and GPS-navigator eTrex from Garmin, which I borrowed from friends. The first thing that interested me, do I need in the future, GPS or enough map and compass. Second, that I wanted to do - it's fun friends e-mails, written almost on-line. And, thirdly, to check the work of this "trio" in the "battle" conditions. The route passes at altitudes ranging from 2000 to 5600 meters above sea level. Temperature range from -20 to +20 `C. Precipitation is almost not there, but tormented by the scorching sun (at such heights strong radiation), and sometimes it was snowing. GPS and Palm were not physically linked (although this is possible with a cable). I input the data manually. From Palm's infrared port, I send data to a cell phone that worked like a regular modem. The phone number of one of Moscow's online prorvayderov. Well, more e-mails flew destinations worldwide. Before leaving for the mountains ligament was tested during the exit on the Moscow area. However, the conditions of Moscow region and a long stay in the mountain area - completely different things. How to behave "mobile trio in the mountains? Just below I'll try to tell you about the features of mobile devices in the mountains.

Palm Vx

Mobile trio of GPS, Palm and a cell phone on Elbrus
The software consisted of the following components:
  • OS - Palm OS 4.1
  • Navigation - Atlas 5.05i - http://www.gpspilot.com
  • Databases - ThinkDB 2.5.0 - http://www.thinkingbytes.com
  • Mail and data transfer - MultiMailPro 3.1 - http://www.actualsoft.com
  • Other - iSilo, Calc, MemoPad, Hi-Note, Quicksheet
I will describe separately the characteristics of some programs. Atlas program allows you to work with a scanned map: calibrate it, introduce new coordinates, obtained on the ground, read the parameters from the GPS receiver, to celebrate the current position on the map. Since I had no cable connecting the GPS and the Palm, then I was interested in the manual entry of coordinates, the program allows a very easy to implement. It should be noted that this is not necessary to recalculate the coordinates in different systems as if we worked with the paper (in domestic kartoproizvodstve used primarily coordinate system Pulkovo 1942, and that gave GPS coordinates to the desired system, we must make some settings that understood not at once). Simply enter the current degrees, minutes and seconds (up to a thousand, while GPS gives accuracy to the tenth of a second). A 2-m removed from the area points can be assigned a card. Another, more convenient navigation software for the Palm I could not find. Here we should note that when converting to a format Palm, 500 metrovka eastern Elbrus (from B. Baksan to Elbrus, including the river valley Adil-su) occupies 1.8 MB of memory (16 shades of gray). At 4-6 MB of free memory Vx, it is quite significant size. Had to sacrifice unnecessary by the campaign software. It makes sense to think about buying a Palm 500 series with a color screen (although the 16 shades of gray to me quite enough).Memory of the PDA may expand by purchasing additional cards. Database ThinkDB. In this program, I had / kept record of a hike, as well as a database of films and removable frames. Ability to create linked tables and filters much easier life, but at the end of the campaign is very convenient to write the report. Is also always on hand captured the archive of films and pictures with descriptions. Those who work with the database (the database), it makes no sense to explain the advantages of this database, and those who do not work - it is easier to store their data in other software that is easier to understand (if there is interest, it is ready to send the constructed base for maintenance of the archive photographs and an archive of travel writing with comments). MultiMailPro - program to work with mail servers. While in Moscow and being an MTS subscriber, I use "mobile Internet" (0885), but when you use roaming, not all mobile operators support this service. So I used a cell phone as a modem, calling on the phone provider (7095, etc.) and transmitting data as if I had done the usual modem.

Bundle theory

Now directly on PDA, cell phone and GPS in the bundle. As mentioned, the handheld, I kept a diary travels, wrote letters, kept travel information. Also, there was flooded: a pair of books, toys, contact information, which I would need to travel, the layout of products, weight equipment, and other trifles. Since GPS does not belong to me, then connect the cable to the Palm I have not had the opportunity, although this possibility exists and should be used. Since I read the current GPS coordinates and altitude, introducing them to the Palm manually. The rest of the information I was not interested in (keeping the route, the return route to the starting point, average speed, sunrise and sunset, etc.). Continue to prepare and process the results from Palm's infrared port transferred to a cell phone, who played the role of a modem. It seemed very easy to send messages almost immediately, until all impressions are fresh and the data are outdated. Especially because all three devices are placed in one pocket. But it has its own peculiarities. The very first thing about what has to wonder - is a matter of supply. GPS uses 2 penlight batteries. According to the instructions of their missing for 20 hours of continuous operation. Thus, if work is continuous, the 14-day trip costs about 28 batteries. This option immediately sweeps for absurdity. Continuous GPS should work only in areas where we need to go back to the previously laid track. It's sporadic. For the entire campaign will calculate that for 10 consecutive hours GPS will be used a maximum of 2-3 times, all the rest of the time - the removal of point readings, that is included, measurements, recorded, turned off. We find that it will take 2-3 sets of batteries. A fresh set of insert into the device itself, and 2 spare sets with you (note that this is only theoretical calculation, the practice described below). Palm powered by a lithium-ion battery, so the question of charging. Power supply to the mountains to haul - meaning no no. In nature, there is a charger from a 9-volt battery. I bought it through a friend in America. It is known that in the cold lithium-ion battery runs down faster than normal temperatures. At this point how much the charge - it is not clear. Trips to the Moscow area have shown that for one day Palm discharged from 100% to 40-35% (if used within 2 hours and the temperature of +5 -5 `C). However, given the nonlinearity of the discharge / charge, one must assume that the charge will last for 3-4 days. Thus, we take 3 batteries for the Palm. Siemens S35 also uses a Li-Io battery, but battery charging for him there (I did not find, although I believe that you can do with their hands). He will work smoothly on the transmission of messages, plus a few phone calls. Disables all alarms and take it fully charged, although it can insure a second battery. It should also be noted that as the Palm, the phone has an infrared port, which is very important. If such a phone does not, then you should think about the cable that connects the two devices.

Experiment

I must say that the experiment was a success. Not everything went smoothly, but in general the band has worked well. Its application in field conditions may, however, I found out for himself a number of important points that must be reckoned with. How does it all behave in the real world? The first session, I gave the path in Nalchik on the train. The letter, written in the same place, went without problems. Time to link up with Moscow number and transmission of data totaled slightly more than a minute (about connection settings, see Appendix A at the end of the article). The next stage - the calibration card, that is, removing the first two conspicuous points in the pathway (a fork in B. Baksan and turn in the river valley Adil-su), brought them into the Atlas. To calibrate the map, you must enter the coordinates of 2 points (preferably located at opposite corners of the map). To this end, moving the stylus around the screen, move the map so that the required point hit the cross hairs centered on the screen.
Mobile trio of GPS, Palm and a cell phone on Elbrus
Screen of Atlas
The first unpleasant place - led the stylus on the screen (we move the map, not a point). This process is quite long and neudoben.Odnako no other choice. Thus, the card was tied to the locality. Arriving in climber camp Gian Tugan, opened the third point (the coordinates of the camp). The error turned out to 300-400 meters, which is a lot!
Mobile trio of GPS, Palm and a cell phone on Elbrus
Error in the determination and / liter Jan-Tugan
Calibrated map suburbs gave an error of 30-40 meters, which is much better than the results obtained in the Mountains (It is possible that the point on which I have calibrated, are too close. Ability to recalibrate I still will be when we are in the vicinity of Mount Elbrus). The second minus the program that you can not calibrate a map on a larger number of points (just over 2-meters), which would decrease the error bound. Another drawback found when we went on an acclimatization. Area of the map that fit on the screen is small, focus on it is not convenient. Have an all-time stylus to drag the map that is not convenient in itself, but in the cold twice. Simply have your hard copy maps, rolled in a transparent film of moisture (about other versions of Atlas, see Appendix B). Three days after the last charge (before departure), the battery level showed 20%, and I decided to recharge the Palm. During the night of Palm charged to 100% and kept this level throughout the next day, then gradually began to be discharged. Average daily time Palm was 2-3 hours, during which I wrote travel notes and one or two letters. In this case, the travel notes were introduced in the cold or the scorching sun, and the letters were written in the camp. At this stage, the way Palm has worked without any problems. A description of a waypoint takes no more than 2-3 minutes, and the main thing - it is a choice entries from the list and only a few stylus strokes describing the main points covered stretch of track. We must note one more feature - Palm stored either in the breast pocket or in the neck pouch - closer to the body to the ground while he was in heat, which contributes to better long-term conservation of charge. During the first half the way with GPS, I just rented the coordinates of points and put them in a Palm. If the weather was unsuitable for recordkeeping, or simply lacked the strength to write, then the waypoint stored in memory GPS and subsequently treated in the camp. Since the trip took place in one area, the recalibration of cards did not make sense. GPS works in this segment, a total of 5-10 minutes a day. It should be noted that, despite the mountainous terrain, GPS satellites are found for 1,5 - 2 minutes, considerably faster than on the streets of Moscow. With the weather would be nice to have a portable MP3 recorder, which can get rid of the writing of data in the current moment, and save the information to the camp, where it can be safely treated. Cellular network in the river valley Adil-su was absent, so the phone was not used. He was off in a backpack. The second part of the trip took place in the Baksan River valley through the village Terskol on the southern slope of Mount Elbrus. At the entrance to the village appeared Terskol network. To date, there shall be made only NC-GSM (North Caucasian GSM), even though I was hoping there connect to MegaFon. This statement does not support the "Mobile Internet", in this case working with a call option of roaming on the Moscow number provider and transmit data. When the first call attempt discovered an interesting fact - in bright sunshine data infraredu transmitted with an error, it was necessary to cover the ports by hand to start the transfer - too much sun. Transfer time was 4.3 letters slightly less than 2 minutes. When we were in Azau (start the cable car), I took one more point. Decided to recalibrate the map (for the moment, I had a point nearly opposite ends of the card), but either something is not done, or just went crashing - to calibrate the map is incorrect and no longer appear on screen. Restore the program is not allowed. At this stage, work with navigation software has ended. This is the biggest minus of the program - the inability to recover, and indeed, such a strange behavior in the calibration. As the lift to Elbrus mobile communication station "horizon" remained confident. Further, in order to conserve battery power, turn off the phone. Subsequent attempts to include not lead to success. At the height of the "home 11" (4000m) network is caught, but the phone is not registered on the network (a very strange fact, since his wife's phone register and we even got calls from his home, but due to her lack of services on the device "mobile office" , the data transfer failed). At times, caught a pair of Turkish networks, but registration is in them, too, is not happening. During the holiday or cooking dinner (at a height is a long process) in the camp, I am pleased to read the book (reader iSilo). This is another useful feature of the Palm:)

Conclusions

Here are the conclusions I have reached after 12 days of travel by these terms. GPS. I once again refused to buy it for several reasons. Use a bunch of GPS + Palm - convenient but not reliability, software and mechanical failures. (There is also a variant of the GPS and PDA based on WindowsCE. See the following list of references). Of course, it is interesting to know the height, position location, but not for $ 200. If you take the GPS alone, the domestic environment where kordinaty areas remain classified, or simply absent, and binding of cards, as a consequence, it becomes possible, it is of little use for high-grade orientation. There are two variants of a binding map, which ensured the applicability of the GPS 100%. The first - to tie the map at home, but then you have to know the coordinates of 2 or more points on the map the way forward, that in our country is practically impossible (admittedly, there are internet coordinates of some points, but they are negligible). Find the same card with information about the coordinates of the area, which could bind to these data is almost impossible. The second option - to calibrate ottsifrovannoy maps on the terrain. He is more suited to conditions in the countries of the CIS, but the question of reliability rejects this option. If using this option, only as a subsidiary. In the suburbs, killometrovki which lie in the network and information on the binding is present on the map (genshtabovskie card) - the question whether GPS is unequivocally in favor of GPS. Here you can still at home to calculate everything: the key points and distances, and road traffic ... In my opinion, if you take a card remote region, the binding of which is impossible because of the lack of information, while GPS is just an expensive toy, come to the aid of a compass and knowledge of cartography. Here you can still at home to calculate everything: the key points and distances, and road traffic ... In my opinion, if you take a card remote region, the binding of which is impossible because of the lack of information, while GPS is just an expensive toy, come to the aid of a compass and knowledge of cartography. Palm Vx - handy and useful thing, but not mandatory. I have not regretted its purchase, nor that he took it with him. As a navigation tool it should not be used or, more precisely - it can count as an adjuvant. Should remain the main map, compass and paper media information with a pencil (not pen, mind you). With the help of the CPC is very convenient to travel notes - they've just ottsifrovany, work in different natural and weather resistant, but the key information I would recommend to duplicate on paper. Single-cell battery "Krona" is enough for two full charge (6-10 days of travel) and a couple of days to maintain the charge at the level of 20-30% with continuous inclusion of charging the battery. When working Palm Vx 2-4 hours a day, charge it would have to once every 3-4 days. Knowing this, it is easy to calculate the consumption of batteries (as is charged on the more expensive battery-powered Energizer I have not tested). Thus for the 12 days I spent only 1 battery. In case of inclement weather (snow / rain) the use of Palm difficult (the screen may get wet, despite the protective film), but in camp he will replace books, toys, and a diary. For travel, I would recommend 505 series, which expands additional memory cards and has a color display (less significant). Tel. In any journey communication is needed, whether it is a portable radio or any other device. Mobile phone has now become the subject of daily life and to use it in a campaign solves an important problem of communication in a way. Nevertheless, the use of the phone has several features and constraints. Charge one battery was enough for exactly 12 days, provided that he worked a total of 3-5 hours, included in this 20-30 times (search the network when you turn on the most expensive operation for batteries) and stored it in a backpack, that is, when the temperature mode, the street (though at night the phone roamed into my sleeping bag when the temperature fell to -20 'C). Call home or write to friends, of course, great, but in our country, cellular communication is present mainly in large towns and tourist destinations are usually far away from them. Thus, using the phone at most impossible. If you and took with your phone, you should disconnect the battery, wrapped in a waterproof bag and put into the pocket in the heat. If you are traveling by car, or your route passes close to large settlements, the phone will surely come in handy. Online information (if we talk about e-mail or similar communication) is always expensive, but we must remember that it will leave you a pretty penny, the price for roaming is not the lowest, and one communication session lasts at least 2 minutes. The next trip I'll take just a Palm. Subject to the route near the settlement - the phone (in the mountains, most likely, I will not take it). GPS will stay with friends. If in my hands is a map which I can tie at home, then I'll try to take and GPS.

Appendix B

Using Atlas (an overview of possibilities)

From the foregoing it is clear that it is not necessary to use navigation with PDA and GPS, as the main option. Nevertheless, this option may be a good complement to the road. Hiking hiking when the speed of your movement is low (you're in the same scale maps), this decision will not be significant, however, if you travel by bike or by car (not on main roads, where the atlas and so clearly the location) the program Atlas will be very useful. The main advantage of the program is the fact that you can put any card, pre-scanned and converted to the format of the program, and calibrate it during the trip. As we move along the route, you can make adjustments in the calibration map, introducing a new anchor point. If you create a map of different scales and pour them into the Palm, bind to the same point, the program lets you quickly switch between them, so you can mashtabirovat map in the program (very convenient when traveling by bike on forest roads). Along with this, the program supports several types of waypoints (travel, cities, airports and destination points), several maps and databases of points. Reads data from the GPS by cable, and if do not have cable, you can enter data manually. Nevertheless, the program has several flaws. The main and most critical shortcoming in the program remains the problem of card recovery after an erroneous calibration. Have a backup version of the card does not allow the limitation of the CPC on memory (Option Palm Vx). Thus, in the event the program is completely unusable. Also not very convenient to carry a map with stylus on the screen especially in field conditions. Despite these shortcomings, the program remains a good helper to navigate. And it is hoped that the next version of the program will be put in mechanisms to restore card after the crash. From 1 to 5 June 2004 in the Taiwanese city of Taipei is held annually electronic exhibition Computex 2004. This exhibition has become increasingly popular and collect a decent number of participants and visitors. We bring to your attention a small photo PDA-part of this exhibition. The fact that the exhibition is held in China, a major effect on the convenience of it for the Europeans. At the exhibition a lot of interesting exhibits, but very often all the information on them is presented only in Chinese ... so difficult to navigate, and besides, and the structuring of the exhibition organizers executed rather poorly. According to the exhibition area occupies about a quarter of the Hanover exhibition CeBIT.

To begin with - especially the "goodies". New PDA Mitac - Mitac Mio 136 with integrated GPS-receiver, specifically designed for navigational purposes and explicitly designed for use in the car. Sample as "sverhsekreten" that it was not allowed to photograph, so that the reporter had to resort to espionage methods. Photo Mitac Mio 136 really bad, but the general idea of the new CPC provides.

Handyman

Handyman
It is said that among the many bad habits, a new folly - a telephone. Mol, the owner of a cell phone falls into dependency on their system, become abnormal, nor shall anyone getting a call. Then withers before our eyes, wasting away, his mind mutitsya. And, after some fifty years, this crazy "telefonoman" in terrible convulsions dying. Oh, I do not know if this was true or so chatting ... But I'm here, for example, is also accustomed to your phone. Fell, figuratively, in full dependence on him. A dangerous symptoms were observed. Maybe in the physical preparation of the case? In the sense - there is nothing to decay? On the other hand - more than twenty years, I was completely dependent on street payphones. And nothing, happily lived to old age ... Seriously, the social effect of the rapid development of mobile telephony in Russia we can not be overestimated. He, this effect is akin to the effect of the ubiquitous Internet. With access to the Internet and cell phone in your pocket, we are doubly protected against inadvertent lack of freedom and dastardly deception of the authorities. Imagine, for example, the Emergency Committee in our time. Yes, the coup would be ashamed to death right in RuNet! And about the bad tanks would have learned even before they are released from the barracks - still someone out of a soldier would have struck over the phone. And there, you see, would have cost without mass festivities ... However, politics is not worth it. And on the Emergency Committee, and the intrigues of the authorities. It is better to talk about not just phone applications, a small cellular telephone. In his program stuffing is much interesting than many of us actively use.

Simple but useful

The situation is something that is just a phone, not encumbered by any service in the production programs of the leading electronic companies do not and seem to be anymore. Today, entry-level devices, very cheap and affordable to everyone, equipped with no less than the prestigious model of two-three years ago. And it is not about the parameters of sensitivity, efficiency and reliability (with the special problems were not before). It is the additions that make a modest phone multifunction device. The first and most simple - is built into most phones cost system for alerting you of upcoming events or, more simply, an electronic alarm clock. With apparent irrelevance to the alarm clock on your phone, buy today without this device makeweights does not make sense (and such a model on sale yet encountered). Considerably cheapened prices have allowed us to use the phone constantly, and not from time to time. In fact, ten dollars - the minimum amount of monthly fees to use the phone at the "Bee Line" - expensive for the vast majority of us. These little enough money for two or three calls daily for a month. Well, there to say hello to the best part directly from the workplace to inform themselves about the imminent return to the bosom of the family, scold his son for an unscheduled deuce ... Had a good chat on the top ten does not work, but for such information that's his short "bursts" - quite. Phone, which is always with me, in the big city just a magic wand. This security (relative - it all depends on the willingness of police to protect us) in a dark alley, and a taxi away from home, and find nestled counterparts in the crush of a large store. Cell phone - like a compass does not vanish in a stone jungle, turning them into safe three pines, get lost among them is problematic, even an infant. Now, look what happens - the phone is always with you, at any time, including sleep and morning awakening. He is always there and still has a built-in alarm clock. And the alarm clock that is better than traditional clock-clocks. Do you remember the shrill voice of his cell phone? Is such a roulade fall asleep? When my old "Eric" was adopted to sing the "heart of the beautiful, the neighbors cats falling from roofs. If it is turned off, someone will vykriknet - "Yes, damn you are lost with their alarm systems! In this song sounds very much even anything. If you are not awake, even nice ... Unfortunately, in a simple alarm devices designed only for a single installation of warning time. When you install the next day the alarm time, not lose, so it will be enough only to include it click "Yes". But to establish some kind of frequency response, say, zooming only on weekdays, and to keep quiet over the weekend, will not work. This requires a multi-function alarm clock (usually with two or three units of time), and even better - the calendar. Phones with built-in calendar moved from the middle-price category in the primary. And this remarkably because availability calendar transforms cellphone in full electronic organizer, albeit partially but superseding PDA ... Converts the owners of the CCP, previously only satisfied with the service functions of their phones, even a little disappointed - they say such a thing in my pocket appeared, and benefit from it nothing at all (give life, guys, pocket-sized machine is still no phone). In fact, the calendar - it's an alarm clock with dozens of plants response time. Not bad, if the signal can be associated with any on-screen message - "to call something" or "do something". When choosing a new phone pay attention to this possibility, the more that the cost of the device it is reflected not much (if) ... Actually, this additional service simple apparatus and exhausted. Address book and voice dialing long been the standard basic equipment. In any case, note - address database for a hundred rooms (this is a standard capacity of the SIM-card) for general use is more than enough. If you are a manager of the company and must keep in mind thousands of numbers, then your machine will be different, higher level - with a huge address book and supplements, such as a digital voice recorder. But this makes sense to talk a little lower. In the meantime, pay attention to the toys, which are also becoming the standard in the base software of any phone. Great need in any variety of games there. Phone screen does not allow comfortable solitaire or browse through the maze. Therefore, the "Snake" or plain "Tetris" (Here truly "miraculous monument - not to Pushkin, of course, Pajitnov) is quite amiss. Somewhere in the queue or in a crush underground these fun will help pass the time ... Or at least take a child who is bored before their whims, you're ready to give him not only the phone, but the gun (if it was) - let a child shoot ...

Not so simply but too very useful

Handyman
Disappearing from counters 320-I phone model from Ericsson enters history not only his shovel design but also useful functions for rather small money. One of these additions - a dictaphone ... Digital recording short voice notes appear in phones "lower middle" price range. That is - in the devices cost from 100-120 dollars and more. Between these digital recorders and tape recorders cell phones, there are two basic differences. Recording time on the phone is usually limited to three minutes (with cheap tape recorders household purposes at least 10 minutes), but the recording quality on the phone above. The fact that the phone voice recorder - is part of a voice call. And for a clear response of this system sound must be recorded with high quality, eliminating failures in recognition. In older models of phones have voice recorders built some oddities - you could write either your voice or the voice of the caller, but not as a fragment of bilateral conversation. The new models of this sort would not have noticed (although I may not be aware of - in this case I apologize). Technical details will leave for another article's talk about the application of the recorder ... Three minutes - quite a bit. But only if you do not use this function on your phone, but only with sadness to see a summary of technical characteristics. In fact, the same three minutes is enough. Digital voice recorder is good in quality audio notebook - for memorizing a phone number, name and address.Later, in a calm atmosphere, and not on the run, this information can make a phone or address book written in the PDA (hands in the usual way - write something completely A brief). Believe me, for such uses three minutes is enough to the fullest. If it were not enough, tape recorders in mobile phones built into one would not ... Another thing is that hardly anyone enjoyed such a useful "fichey" of his unit. And in vain ... Among the other useful additions cell phone should note utility for round-trip sending SMS-messages, WAP browser and email client SMTP/POP3. Opportunity to exchange short SMS-messaging is in any phone, from the most simple. At a certain asceticism SMS can find an adequate substitute for an e-mail. Say, is delivery of text messages from one subscriber to - what else do you want? But here a question - what to send a text message, if you can just call?
Handyman
A full-featured email client gives the phone a completely new quality. And it is not in the size of messages (the phone is unlikely to take megabyte letter, his abilities in this regard is rather limited). Business - access to Internet services. Due to the mail program on your phone (very desirable support GPRS) we are able to send an email to the subscriber, bereft of pleasure using a cell phone, or living God knows where. The same goes in the opposite direction, in the sense - to get the message to your phone from anyone. For more or less active use of e-mail via cell phone has a serious objection - it's expensive. Yes, wireless Internet access (note - without the use of the service GPRS, which greatly reduces the cost of wireless internet access), a thing not cheap. But who speaks of constant use? Receive e-mail only on the phone does not necessarily! Enough to use this service from time to time and, if necessary - on the road, waiting for a very important message, or if the account lying around a certain number of dollars that would be nice to spend a really ... Gut his own expense to help, and other popular (at least in words) the service - access to WAP-resources. The presence of WAP browser in the phone, until recently, clearly indicating the class of vehicle. Today, however, WAP is cheaper, and the browser can be found in the entry-level phones. Despite the fact that I am skeptical about the possibilities of WAP, it does not mean that I do not like the technology itself. It would be appropriate content ... And read on your phone screen weather forecast, to run through to news reports, look at the theatrical announcements - that is wrong? In fact, more anecdotes that something is coming. But this dessert lover ... But the most pleasant addition to the telephone can be regarded as an infrared port, and, of course, built-in modem. That's where real life begins ... No problems with syncing the phone and computer - to update the address database or overwrite ringtones. There is an opportunity to receive mail directly on your PDA or laptop ... It is for these reasons, the owners of unprepossessing in appearance (a controversial statement) "Eric" to keep their time-tested devices. Especially good are the same cumbersome "Three hundred twenty" ... In conclusion I would like to note that this is no any review. This is - a reminder and, above all, himself. Zasmatrivayas on the latest communicator, presenting themselves as owners of this wonderful technology in all respects, we often lose sight of that do not use even half of the possibilities inherent in the most ordinary cell phone. That is, pink sweet dream in practice is often a reality that has long been under our hands, but we did not see it either, or too lazy to rasprobovat. In addition to test new technology in their simplified "telephone" option (I'm on a wireless access network resources), it is easier to navigate in the rapidly changing world, communicators and smartphones. Great always starts with a small ...And when vospolzueshsya charms Multimedia Messaging Service MMS, if still not bothered to pay attention to SMS, considering it fun for young people? Be curious, I say ... themselves. The authors, translation:

Dell Axim X30: a new pocket-sized miracle eyewitness

That left Dell X30 - the first PDA running Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition, built on a processor-based next-generation Intel XScale 624 MHz. We represent your attention of his review, made from high-tech enthusiast, Ed Hardy, editor in chief of the site Brighthand.com. Editor HPCru supplemented this article information about the performance of new items. As soon as the handheld will be in Moscow, HPCru submit it to a full review of what is called the "first hand". The new Axim X30 is an updated version of the model Axim X3i. Like the predecessor, the H30 combines compact size with a good memory and ability to work in networks of Wi-Fi. In addition, Dell has added a new processor that runs at 624 MHz and fashionable wireless adapter Bluetooth. The most important innovation in the H30 include the use of Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition. Thanks to her, H30 can work in portrait or landscape mode to display the data.

Appearance and ergonomics

Design H30 repeats the X3i. Dell did not change a thing, rightly believing that the best is the enemy of the good. We see the same form, screen, keyboard.
Dell Axim X30: a new pocket-sized miracle eyewitness
The width of the body is about 7.5 cm length - 11.5 cm, not counting serving at half a centimeter antenna. H30 has a medium size, and although small it can not be named, he's pretty fit comfortably in a pants pocket. When using the bundled cover machine significantly adds to the volume.
Dell Axim X30: a new pocket-sized miracle eyewitness
Screen in the H30 has a standard 3.5-inch diagonal supports 16-bit color at a resolution of 240x320 (QVGA), which is the bottom of the screen resolution at today's PDAs. Matrix - transflective, which makes using the PDA as comfortable in the room, even though the air is also no problem. Frankly, I calmly read the text, placing the screen in direct sunlight. The main body of H30 is placed seven different buttons. First draw your attention, most likely, the power button. In addition to performing their duties, this key displays stage charging process: amber during and after the green. In addition, he serves as PIM-manager, shimmering green when activated programmed reminders. Directly below the screen are four shortcuts to launch applications. By default, these buttons cause the Calendar, Contacts, Inbox, and Today. Just left of the visible power key recorder, a microphone that hangs slightly above the screen. Between the keyboard shortcuts to launch applications fit a standard five-way Directional Pad. I used him mainly for games. On the opposite side of the voice recorder button is the key management functions of wireless communications. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth modules consume a lot of energy, so it's best to disable them when they are not claimed. Unfortunately, the button can not be configured so that it is activated only one module. Rarely have I needed the work of both adapters simultaneously, so most of the time I used the soft keys for power management Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. All buttons are reprogrammable Dell X30. Using this, I hung it on a launch Pocket Internet Explorer, and the other to switch between portrait and landscape screen. On the left side of the housing is located a scroll wheel. Scroll wheel can be pressed by selecting the highlighted item on the list.
Dell Axim X30: a new pocket-sized miracle eyewitness
At the "top" is a slot for SD / MMC card with support for SDIO. I did not fail to test my SDIO peripherals - everything worked perfectly. Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition allows you to use a card with dual functionality. For example, Wi-Fi card from SanDisk, which works just like a memory card. For obvious reasons, H30 do not need it, but in future we may see some very interesting komboresheniya-based SD-ins. At the upper end of H30 also fit the infrared data port - very handy thing to control your TV, especially in public places:)

Inside

As I mentioned, the H30 - the first PDA running Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition for Pocket PC. Wishing to consult the overview of the OS, I ask here. Axim X30 charged 624MGts latest processor Intel XScale. Spb Benchmark test gave me a result in 1764 points, which is 524 points more than the result Axim X3i, and more than any other Pocket PC, which I have ever seen. However, the testimony - expected, considering the frequency of the processor. X30 is equipped with 64 MB RAM memory, virtually all of them available to the user. Also, the CCP has 31 MB of internal flash memory for storing files, a 4 MB less than the X3i. That is all for H30 is 95 MB for user programs and files. Agree on the PDA market has little models PocketPC, equipped with more memory.

Programs

Despite the fact that Microsoft, at the request of users, has corrected many flaws in Windows Mobile, coftvernomu giant, there is still work to do. In the Second Edition is still not close the program by clicking on the cross in the title bar - the application simply minimizes and continues to work in the background, taking up valuable memory resources. Of course, you can collapse softinkoy manually, but agree that failure to do so the usual way a strongly irritating. Fortunately, the H30 comes with a utility Switcher Bar. Run it - and at the top of the screen appears a special icon, which displays on the first click the list of active applications. With Switcher Bar, you can easily switch between applications and close them. Concern about the Dell user touches to the depths.

Software included

I will not fully describe all the programs bundled Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition for Pocket PC. But if readers are people who choose the H30 as its first PDA, then they think it will be interesting to know in brief, on what this machine. One of the most frequently used applications for Pocket PC is an address book and calendar. H30 comes with the latest version of Microsoft Outlook, taking on those concerns to themselves. You can synchronize Outlook with a list of its desktop version, which is always handy.
Dell Axim X30: a new pocket-sized miracle eyewitness
In addition, the H30 comes with the standard versions of Pocket Word and Pocket Excel. Their functionality can be described as "udovletvotvoritelnuyu. Of course, they can not, and a small fraction of what they know how their desktop counterparts. For example, you receive a letter with attachments to a file. Doc, Pocket Word will open it without complaint, but did not show any of the inserted image. And if you change anything in the document and sends it back, your recipient will see that the images disappeared altogether from the document. Yet the very ability to view documents in the letters - it's not too bad, even if the editing can cause problems.

Multimedia features

At H30 was originally installed Windows Media Player for Pocket PC, which plays mp3 files and wmf. The standard headphone output is located on the left side of the handheld, but put the headphones themselves have forgotten. The monaural speaker is located on the rear. Speaker of the rather loud, so you can hear quite well.

Wireless communications

Two built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth will help you stay connected wherever you are. Wi-Fi can use when you are in range of the access point. Due to their low cost, you can buy one for home and one at the office. In addition, access point Wi-Fi now installed in many hotels, airports, shops and cafes (we are talking about the United States - Ed.). H30 pleased me long distance communication. I tested it on a cheap access point installed in my home. Limit range was the road not far from my house. I calmly connected to a point anywhere in the house. This - the best result among those PDAs with Wi-Fi, which I tested. Thanks to built-in antenna, carefully placed Dell in the top cover H30. And, thanks to Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition the process connection is very easy for the user. Once I turned on Wi-Fi module in a PDA, such as Windows found my point and asked if I wanted to connect to it. A few seconds later I surf on the internet. Being outside the networks of Wi-Fi, you cmozhete use your cell phone if it supports Bluetooth. The speed of connection, of course, will be less than Wi-Fi, but it is quite sufficient for email and network. Finally, in a PDA and a Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth with the ability to operate simultaneously. In the near future it will be possible to write a letter to the special Bluetooth keyboard and quickly send them on Wi-Fi. Do not forget - the green light on the antenna H30 indicates that operates Wi-Fi. Blue light reminds enabled Bluetooth.

Work on the Internet

At H30, as in most other PDAs, once installed web browser and email client. Pocket Internet Explorer supports a standard set of technologies: CSS, SSL and JavaScript. The Internet is more convenient to work, switching to landscape mode. H30 makes it easy to do it.
Dell Axim X30: a new pocket-sized miracle eyewitness
Many sites posted the text in multiple columns. Pocket Internet Explorer allows you to combine them into one and display a single CPC column. Inbox application takes your email using POP3 or IMAP4. Is a function of the spell checker. By letters can be attached to attachment. All this is easily synchronized with Outlook on your desktop PC using ActiveSync.

Performance Axim X30

As is known, Axim X30 is equipped with the latest model of the processor for mobile Intel XScale PXA270 Bulverde. The elder line of Axim X30 machine running on 624MGts processor, the other two - on his 312MGts-variants. Using the Power applet control panel, you can manually set the modes of the processor. There are settings Maximum Performance, PowerSave and Auto. In the first case, the processor runs at a maximum (or 624MGts 312MGts - depending on model). Economical PowerSave keeps 208MGts frequency, which is sufficient for most applications. In Auto mode the processor tries to dynamically adapt to the needs of applications, giving maximum frequency when working with multimedia and benchmarks, and in periods of downtime is kept to 208MGts. All Axim from Dell uses the memory type of Intel StrataFlash. It is more expensive than NAND memory, but runs faster. Since the NAND memory is not enough bystrodeystvenna, OS has to load into RAM, taking up megabytes of the user. StrataFlash is free from this drawback, since it has sufficient speed for the OS, saving RAM. On assurances of CNET Labs, Axim X30 with 312MGts processor operates at an average 15% faster than the Toshiba e805 (400MHz Intel PXA263), and his elder brother 624MGts - 35%. Apparently, the new Axim PDA are the fastest to date. These machines perfectly plays video and can easily handle multiple applications running simultaneously, even when PowerSave, when the processor is clocked at 208MGts. In CNET Labs test, the duration of the model X30 (312MGts) of video playback with maximum backlight and disabled communication modules lasted 4:00 46 minutes. In the test, pretending to normal daily use, time of life between charges is 16 hours. Elder X30 (624MGts) lasted, respectively, 4 hours and 30 minutes and 14 hours. Pleased and modules Wi-FI and Bluetooth, showing a quick search for stations, a large operating range and stable connection. Site Pdabuyersguide.com also conducted several tests on the performance straight from the tin Axim X30. Given the new processor Intel XScale PXA270, all we have come to expect from his high rate, but the results exceeded all expectations. Testers used a package of SPB Benchmark, installed on the Axim X30. Other software is not involved. We compared the model Dell Axim X5 Advanced, HP iPAQ h5555 and Dell Axim X30 312 and 624 MHz models. The more numbers the better the result. Maximum values are highlighted in green. And here is a comparative table of the results.
Dell Axim X30: a new pocket-sized miracle eyewitness
Detailed information about the nature of each of the tests here. As can be seen in all parameters Axim X30 (624MGts) won a convincing victory over the other models. Despite the fact that somewhere in the X30 times faster than the competition, we must remember that he competes with (alas), obsolete models, having a technological advantage over the latter. But now it is only produced in series PDA to the latest platform Wintel (XScale PXA270 + Windows Mobile 2003 SE). So compare what we have. Dell has made very good progress, first released ultra-CCP. Now the turn of the other manufacturers. Everyone knows that the CCP's flagship industry - HP - intensely preparing for the presentation of promising new products, it is capable to move the Dell on the pedestal of technological leadership.

Battery

Machine is equipped with 950 mAh lithium-ion battery. My H30 lasted 3.5 hours on one battery charge. Sometimes I used the Wi-Fi, but for the most part, communication modules have been disabled. Sometime after 2.5 hours of Wi-Fi module refused to run - Windows Mobile is not allowed because of the ability to quickly drain the battery. At three o'clock I got the first warning about the level of charge. Half an hour later PDA disconnected. Fortunately, the battery is replaceable. You can add more storage, 950 mAh, for $ 49 or spend $ 99 on huge 1800 mAh.

Stylus

Some believe that the stylus is not such an important part of the CCP, as, for example, the processor. But if you ever used a cheap stylus shabby construction, then you do not need to explain the importance of this piece of plastic. Stylus H30 has an average length sufficient for comfortable work. He is a little flattened and takes up little space in the building machine. In his hand "fits" quite comfortably.

Cradle

I liked Cradle for H30. Designed in the style of "metallic chrome", it looks cool on my desk. Besides the basic functions, the cradle has a slot for charging the replaceable batteries.

Cover

Comes with a very decent leather case. It can hang up and wear on your belt.To some, he'll like, well, someone certainly turn their attention to third-party cases.

Conclusions

Dell has taken the best of the X3i and added something else - so was born the current top handheld - H30. Of course he is not as beautiful as the HP iPAQ h4155, but costs less. For $ 350 (in the U.S.. - Ed.) We get a combination in the form of faster processors, large memory and built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, which makes buying H30 very seductive. Model with 624MGts processor - this is not the whole line of Axim. In addition, within it came out and had already sold Axim X30 Low and Axim X30 Mid. So if you are not to powerful 624MGts engine, then for $ 279 you get the same set of features, but with 312MGts. And if you do not need no Bluetooth, no Wi-Fi, and even then you can buy a stripped-down Axim X30 Low for $ 199. (Again, the price given in this article are relevant only to the U.S.. In Russia, all of these PDAs will cost about $ 50 more expensive.. - Ed.) Editorial HPCru. On the timing of deliveries to Russia of all three new products yet officially not announced. According to competent sources, Dell Axim X30, most likely, will be available in July and August. Sources, Materials:
